Qualification : Matriculation or equivalent from a recognized university/ Board with. i) Two years work experience in respective trades; OR ii) One year certificate course from Industrial Training Institute/ Vocational Institute with at least one year experience in the trade; OR Two year Diploma from Industrial Training Institute in the trade or similar trade.

Physical Standards : Scheduled Tribes/ Adivasi of all States and UTs including Nagas ans Mizos : Height- 162.5 Cms. Chest - 76.81 Cms. Weight : Proportionate to height as per medical standard.
Men belonging to Hill areas of Garhwal, Kumaon, Gorkhas, Dogras candidates failling in the category of Marathas and candidates belonging to the States of Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir and Leh & ladakh regions of J&K: Height- 165 Cms. Chest - 78.83 Cms. Weight : Proportionate to height as per medical standard.
All other States & Uts: Height- 167.5 Cms. Chest - 78.83 Cms. Weight : Proportionate to height as per medical standard.
Medical Standards: Vision: Minimum distance vision should be 6/6 and 6/9 of both eyes without correction (i.e. without wearing glasses). Must pass high grade colour vision test. Must not have knock knee flat feet or squint in eyes. Must not have any defect/deformity which is likely to the efficient performance of duties. Must qualify the physical efficency test and medical examination. Must qualify trade test of respective trade.

Till 1965 India’s borders with Pakistan were manned by the State Armed Police Battallion. Pakistan attacked Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet on 9 April, 1965 in Kutch. This exposed the inadequacy of the State Armed Police to cope with armed aggression due to which the Government of India felt the need for a specialized centrally controlled Border Security Force, which would be armed and trained to man the International Border with Pakistan. As a result of the recommendations of the Committee of Secretaries, the Border Security Force came into existence on 01 Dec 1965, and Shri K F Rustamji was the first chief and founding father.
